I awoke one morning to find my youth and vitality gone.

The mountain retreated, until Goodness itself faded from my life. Yet the years of endless war and killing wore down my soul, as the wind gnaws stone into sand. The Taraks broke upon me, crashing again and again against my battlements with no more effect than spring rain on the mountain. I thundered across the land, striking as the wrath of God. My beginnings are lost in darkness, and yet I see shapes swimming before me. Replace the description and text of the Tome of Strahd with the following, adapted from earlier editions: In order to keep it relevant, we gotta rework it. This doesn’t get into any of the above, when it’s the perfect place to expound on the past of both Strahd and Barovia. The Tome of Strahd in Curse of Strahd serves but one purpose: to remind the players that the Sunsword is about the only thing that will put him down for good. From the Opening Pages, to the Back Appendices Where does that leave us? With a complete rewrite of the Tome of Strahd handout, that’s where. He sets the template for the Fisher King nature of darklords and domains they’re like reverse King Arthurs. This means the von Zaroviches cannot be invaders, so we’re throwing out all of the Curse canon.

The Mists dragged Strahd into the Demiplane of Dread, but the lord is the land. A large part of how Ravenloft came to be is tied up in the vampire mythos. The key issue here is the invasion and conquering of what is now called Barovia. Perfectly serviceable, except… Why This Doesn’t Work After the death of his parents, Sergei gets engaged to Tatyana, and everything goes south. The realm of Barovia was conquered by King Barov, and Strahd served as general in his armies. Strahd and the von Zaroviches are presented as invaders in the book. (I may be too late to the Fraternity’s symposium, and the Kargatane may have long since passed into legend, but I have a few tricks up my sleeve I hope will honor their memory.)ġ) Strahd’s History is All Wrong Curse Canon (pgs. It’s Gothic horror in a sword-and-sorcery setting. To get the most out of this segment, remember that Ravenloft isn’t Silent Hill. In each section, I’ll be giving a brief overview of what the book says, explaining why that doesn’t work for our purposes, and then giving a write-up to fix it. I’ll be going point to point throughout the book, and editing it for those of us who prefer Ravenloft 3.X. That means it’s time to roll up the ol’ sleeves, and get to editing. Gothic Horror should never do this, which is something White Wolf understood. Every time I started to get involved in the new Barovia, there would be something to pull me out of the mood. Unfortunately, this means it comes complete with weird divergences into puns and jokes. It will undoubtedly please gamers looking for (yet another) remake of the original I6 – Ravenloft. It hits all the same Hammer Horror tropes, and pulls them off better than Expedition did.
#CURSE OF STRAHD MEMES PLUS#
On the plus side, it’s not the abysmal Expedition to Castle Ravenloft! It’s also not White Wolf and Arthaus’s excellent Ravenloft 3.X. Easily the best book like it Wizards has published. To start off with, it’s certainly a good adventure set.

Feel free to use some, all, or nothing I write.įor our inaugural case, we’ve got Wizards of the Coast’s recent Curse of Strahd. In these segments, we’ll be analyzing published works and well, fixing them. Welcome to the first of a project I’m calling Repair Studio. I’ll be doing my best to prevent it from happening again.
